Polycythaemia refers to the number of red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit in a unit volume of peripheral blood being higher than normal, regardless of the white blood cell and platelet counts. In the past, it was called polycythemia abroad, which actually means pancytosis, including increases in white blood cells and platelets. The correct English term should be erythrocytosis. Erythrocytosis is a group of symptoms. Any cause that can increase red blood cells falls under this condition. Like anemia, it is not a diagnostic disease name. Erythrocytosis in pregnancy is mainly seen in relative erythrocytosis.
