Chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Hashimoto's disease, etc. In 1912, Hashimoto first reported 4 women with enlarged thyroid glands, whose thyroid tissue had 'transformed into lymphoid tissue' [struma lymphomatosa]. These patients developed hypothyroidism after surgery.
