Cushing's syndrome

Internal Medicine

Cushing's Syndrome (CS), also known as hypercortisolism, is a group of syndromes caused by long-term excessive secretion of cortisol by the adrenal cortex due to various etiologies. Its main manifestations include moon face, plethoric appearance, central obesity, acne, purple striae, hypertension, secondary diabetes, and osteoporosis. Since long-term use of exogenous adrenal glucocorticoids or excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages can also cause clinical manifestations similar to Cushing's syndrome, and all manifest as hypercortisolemia, those caused by organic lesions are called endogenous Cushing's syndrome; those caused by exogenous supplementation or alcohol are called exogenous, drug-induced, or Cushingoid syndrome.
