Reexpansion pulmonary edema is acute pulmonary edema occurring in the affected lung or both lungs within a short period (from minutes to hours) after the collapse of the lung on the diseased side caused by pneumothorax, pleural effusion, or a huge intrathoracic tumor is relieved through closed thoracic drainage or tumor resection, allowing the collapsed lung to reexpand. The mortality rate is approximately 20%.
