Internal Medicine / 妇产科 / Traditional Chinese Medicine
Cough variant asthma, also known as cough-variant asthma, refers to a special type of asthma in which chronic cough is the main or only clinical manifestation. At the onset of bronchial asthma, approximately 5% to 6% of cases present with persistent cough as the predominant symptom, which often occurs at night or in the early morning and is typically irritant in nature, frequently being misdiagnosed as bronchitis. The age of onset is higher than that of typical asthma, with about 13% of patients being over 50 years old, and it is more common in middle-aged women. In childhood, cough may be the only symptom of asthma and can even serve as a precursor to the development of bronchial asthma, with a marked increase in hospital patients also observed.
