Purulent osteomyelitis of the skull most commonly arises from direct infection, such as open skull fractures, infections following craniotomy or skull drilling, skull traction procedures, as well as radiation therapy or failed skin grafts that leave the skull exposed to infection. The disease can occur at any site of the skull, but is most frequently seen in the frontal and parietal bones of the calvarium.
