Since Pick first reported this disease in 1892, it has been called Pick's disease. The pathological changes mainly involve atrophy of the cerebral cortex, or localized changes in the frontal and temporal lobes, and it may also be classified as subcortical dementia. The main manifestation of this disease is progressive intellectual impairment, with a chronic course. Its pathological changes are lobar atrophy predominantly affecting the frontal and temporal lobes. However, neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in the brain do not exceed the degree seen in normal aging.
