senile chorea

Internal Medicine

Senile chorea refers to a condition occurring in the elderly over 60 years of age, characterized by degeneration of large and small nerve cells in the caudate nucleus and putamen, with the cerebral cortex generally not involved, and the brain lesion sites similar to those of Huntington's disease. The onset of this disease is acute, the choreiform movements are relatively mild and are the only symptom, without accompanying intellectual decline. The choreiform movements sometimes appear only in the tongue, face, and buccal muscle regions. To differentiate it from chronic progressive chorea, it is currently inclined to be classified as an independent disease entity.
