Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease characterized by a conduction disorder at the neuromuscular junction of striated muscle, characterized by easy fatigability of muscles with symptoms worse in the evening and better in the morning, and improvement after rest or use of cholinesterase inhibitors. It frequently involves the extraocular muscles, masticatory muscles, swallowing muscles, and respiratory muscles. In severe cases, bulbar palsy occurs. The distribution of affected muscles varies from person to person and from time to time, and is not the paralytic manifestation seen when a particular nerve is damaged. This disease should be termed acquired autoimmune myasthenia gravis, usually abbreviated as myasthenia gravis.
