Premature ventricular contractions are ventricular activations that arise prematurely from ectopic pacemakers distal to the bundle of His. Premature ventricular contractions in the elderly are more commonly seen in patients with organic heart disease, but may also occur in normal individuals without organic heart disease. When premature ventricular contractions are detected, 24-hour Holter monitoring is generally recommended, and quantitative and qualitative analysis of the premature ventricular contractions should be performed to evaluate and guide prognosis. Some elderly patients may have no obvious clinical symptoms, while others may develop serious consequences, which should not be overlooked.
