Senile myxomatous valvular disease is a degenerative, nonspecific, non-inflammatory heart valve disease in which myxomatous degeneration of the heart valves causes atrioventricular valve prolapse into the atrium during systole and semilunar valve prolapse into the ventricular outflow tract during diastole, with or without valvular regurgitation. This myxomatous degeneration can lead to multi-valve prolapse, with mitral valve prolapse being the most common clinically, followed by aortic and tricuspid valve prolapse, while pulmonary valve prolapse is rare. This disease and its complication (chordal rupture) are common causes of valvular regurgitation, and severe cases require surgical intervention.
